Testicular Self Examination
Health care professionals recommend that the testicular self examination is done monthly to check for any abnormalities that could indicate the start of testicular cancer. Testicular cancer is a common kind of cancer especially in white men aged between 15-35. Early detection of the cancer can almost guarantee a 100 percent survial rate. This makes testicular self examinations vital for young men.
The examination does not take up much time and can be performed easily after a warm bath or shower. The following are the steps necessary for effective testicular self examination.
Find a good mirror and stand in front of it with your legs slightly apart.
Check for any swelling on the skin of the scrotum
Touch the testicles with both hands and examine them closely. Put the index finger and middle finger under the testicle and place the thumbs on the top part. Knead the testicles gently between the fingers. The two testicles may vary in size but that is considered normal.
Locate the epididymis, which is a soft cordlike structure behind the testicle that collects and carries sperm. Some people confuse this for a lump but with practice every man would learn to understand what is normal and abnormal in his testicles.
Pay special attention to the sides of the testicles since this is were the cancerous lumps normally are. However, at times the lumps may still show up on the front.
It is important that any abnormalities are reported to a doctor or urologist right away. Remember that the faster the testicular cancer is detected, the easier it is to treat effectively.
