Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Infections (STD/STI)

Sexually Transmitted Diseases are diseases that are contracted primarily through sexual intercourse and sexual interactions. This contact is not limited to vaginal intercourse but includes oral-genital and anal-genital contact as well. These sexually transmitted diseases affect people of all ages, races, social classes and gender.

STD's are an increasing health problem because;

  • Most STD's are asymptomatic and produce no symptoms especially in the first stages making it easier to infect another person.
  • Some STD's such as herpes, genital warts and HIV cannot be cured.
  • Left untreated many harmless STD's can cause other health complications.
  • Antibiotics that may have worked well in the past are not as effective nowadays because the viruses, bateria etc are becoming more resistant.

    STD's are most prevalent in the younger generation (teens and young adults) especially those with multiple partners.

    The incidence of STD's seems to be growing and this section will be dealing with many of the common STDs in detail. Finally, remember that a condom (safe sex) can almost always, provide adequate protection from STD transmission.
