The Prostate

What is the prostate?

The prostate is a gland that is found exclusively in males because it serves its purpose in the male reproductive system. The function of the prostate is to produce and secrete seminal fluid which transports sperm during ejaculation.

As the diagram shows, the prostate is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The size of the prostate gland is small around 1.5 inches and shaped similar to a chestnut.

The prostate is composed of roughly 30% muscular tissue, while the remaining 70% is glandular tissue.

Aging and the prostate

As a man gets older, the prostate could become a source of problems. There are 3 major conditions related to the prostate.

In one scenario, the prostate could start increasing in size. This condition is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This condition may become a problem if the prostate grows too big, since it may press against the urethra and cause the flow of urine to become weaker or slower.

Another prostate condition that could arise is Prostatitis, which is connected to the inflammation of the prostate. This inflammation could cause pain in the testicles, or in the rectal area and may at times even include problems with ejaculation, urination, or defecation.

Prostate cancer is the most severe of these prostate diseases and involves a malignant tumor in the prostate gland. Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer in the United States and unlike the other prostate related conditions prostate cancer does not cause any symptoms making detection harder. This highlights the importance of regular prostate checkups, especially in older men.
