PMS (Pre Menstrual Syndrome)

PMS stands for Pre Menstrual Syndrome and is the term used to describe the many (roughly 150) physical and psychological symptoms that start a week or two before menstruation. These symptoms are a result of a hormonal imbalance and affect around 85 percent of pre menopausal women.

The birth control pill is sometimes recommended to relieve PMS symptoms since this balances out the hormones. However the birth control pill is highly ineffective as a treatment for mood swings! For depressive symptoms, women are often prescribed antidepressants since these can help with the severe irritability, depression and anxiety that some women with PMS have.

Several health professionals have come up with the following PMS recommendations that will help control and provide relief from PMS. So check out the following tips to control PMS! Remember, PMS is real and you don't have to live with it! Take control now!

  • Reduce Caffeine intake - Studies have shown that caffeine increases the PMS symptoms so try to avoid it as much as possible. Caffeine is found in coffee, tea, chocolate, cola beverages etc.

  • Eliminate Stress - Stress makes a person more tense and more moody. This will make the PMS symptoms feel much worse then they actually are. Take time to relax at the end of each day. Some women have found yoga to be very helpful in relieving stress. Also, certain stretches can relieve some of the pain in the groin area due to better circulation.

  • Eat Well - Eating a well balanced diet will ensure that your body gets all the nutrients needed for living. Having a deficiency of calcium and vitamin D will make your PMS feel much worse. Calcium and vitamin D have also been proven to be effective against osteoporosis, back pain and some forms of cancer.

  • Avoid Salt - Try to avoid salt the few days before your period since salt makes bloating and fluid retention worse.

  • Cut down on Alcohol - Cut down on alcohol before your period. Alcohol is a depressive and will do nothing to improve your PMS related mood swings!

  • Exercise Regularly - Regular exercise will make you feel less bloated. Studies have also shown that exercise tends to alleviate the depression and anxiety symptoms associated with PMS.

  • Natural PMS Remedy - There are several PMS remedies to choose from. Always opt for PMS remedies that are made from natural ingredients to be sure you will get no unpleasant side effects.
