Pain related ParaphiliasSadomasochismSadism is the intentional infliction of pain on another person, or the threat to do so, for sexual excitement. A sadomasochist can derive sexual pleasure from inflicting and receiving pain. Sadomasochists can be male or female, heterosexual or homosexual. Most encounters are planned out and have a script to follow. The success of these encounters depends on the ability to roleplay. Another aspect of sadomasochism is the centrality of fantasy and non physical aspect of dominance and submission. Common settings used are teacher/student, parent/child, master/slave and some of the most common procedures used are "whipping, piercing, scarification, cutting, hanging, electric shock, bondage, burning etc" Most encounters of this type can end up in a dangerous way. There are "safe word" encounters, which involve agreeing on a "safe word" before the encounter starts, and will be stopped if one partner says it. SadismSadism is a paraphilia where administering pain is necessary to achieve gratification. Sadists can conduct a play-acting sexual activity with a willing partner, who does not receive much pain (eg: spanking, biting etc). At this extent it is not considered dangerous. On the other hand, taken further, sadism can cause quite a lot of suffering and pain and can be fatal. At the other end of the continuum we find rapes, torture and even murder. Sometimes, the sadist achieves pain just by watching the victim suffer. MasochismLike sadism, masochism can vary from mild to extreme cases. In the mild cases, bondage, spanking, and being overpowered physically are amongst the most common activities. These acts are done under carefully controlled conditions with a trusted partner. At the other end of the spectrum, there are the genuinely painful and dangerous activities, such as whipping, semi strangulation, being trampled, self mutilation etc Although pain related sex between consenting adults typically does not result in physical injury, the activities can get out of control. Particularly dangerous activities are those known as "autoerotic asphyxiation", which involve sexual arousal by oxygen deprivation, obtained by hanging, putting masks or plastic bags over the face and severe chest compression. Accidents can turn out to be fatal. |
