Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease, is one of the oldest and most common types of arthritis. Anyone can be affected; however, since osteoarthritis is the result of high usage of the joints of the body, older people are particularly prone.

Osteoarthritis is characterised by the breakdown of cartilage, the firm cushion found between two bones to stop them from grinding together. Sometimes, the whole cartiliage gets broken down leaving a bone on bone joint.


Symptoms of Osteoarthritis


Symptoms include;
  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Creaking or grinding sounds when joint is moved
  • Slow movement
  • at an advanced stage, joints may appear Swollen


    Treatment for Osteoarthritis


    Commonly affected areas include the neck, lower back, hands, hip and knee.

    The goal of treatment in osteoarthritis is to reduce joint pain and inflammation (usally through Analgesics and NSAIDS) while improving and maintaining joint function. There is no cure for osteoarthritis, but it can be mantained and improved with the right treatment.

    Factors that influence the type of treatment given include;
  • the age of the patient
  • the type of osteoarthritis
  • the severity of osteoarthritis
  • joints effected by osteoarthritis.

    Types of possible treatments include;
  • Dietary and Vitamin supplements
  • Natural herbal remedies
  • Cold or hot therapy
  • Physical theraphy and exercising the affected joint
