Genital Herpes

Genital Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease that is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV).

The HSV exists in two strains,

  • HSV type 1 - characterised by cold sores and fever blisters that can be transmitted to the lower body.
  • HSV type 2 - includes painful sores on the lower body (genitals, thighs and buttocks) that can be transmitted to the mouth through oral/genital contact.

Within 3-20 days after the exposure, itching and tingling can occur, followed by an eruption of small bumps called vesicles or papules that will appear on the affected area. The attack can last up to 3 weeks and can recur. The first outbreak lasts an average of 12 days, while subsequent outbreaks last an average of 5 days.

    Genital Herpes Outbreak

    When an outbreak occurs,
  • Get some rest to allow the immune system to work at its best.

  • Eat a balanced diet to strengthen the immune system.

  • Avoid tight clothes and stick mainly to loose cotton wear.

  • Take a painkiller such as paracetamol, aspirin or other pain relievers.

Transmission and Treatment of Genital Herpes

Like Gonorrhea, Herpes can be transmitted from a mother to her baby during birth, leading to brain damage or even death for the newborn.

Although drugs like acyclovir can be used to easen the symptoms, there is no known cure for herpes.
