Hair Loss

Hair loss (balding) can be due to a variety of factors including stress, thyroid problems, reaction to surgery or chemotherapy, aging etc. In males, hair loss and balding is usually a result of hormonal changes and genetic predispositions.

Causes of Hair Loss

Normal hair grows an inch every few months and each hair grows for 2 to 6 years until it falls out. As soon as it falls out a new hair replaces it and begins growing in its place. Each hair comes out of a cavity in the skin which is referred to as a follicle. In normal cases, this follcile replaces each hair that falls out.

In balding males, this follicle shrinks over time and a result the man gets shorted and finer hair. Finally the man ends up with a tiny follicle with no hair inside. Although small, the follicles remain alive suggesting that their could be a possibilty of growth. In fact what most hair loss treatments and shampoos try to do is to stimulate the hair follicles again to produce new hairs.

Symptoms of Hair Loss

Normally, the male baldness starts at the hairline. The hair starts receding gradually to for the shape of an "M". At this point the existing hair starts becoming finer and shorter and the hair at the crown starts to thin out. By time, the patches grow bigger causing a bald crown with some hair at the bottom and sides of the head.
