The Frotteur gains gratification by rubbing his genitals against unconsenting strangers. This act is usually carried out in a public and crowded place. After the act, the Frotteur usually disappears into the crowd. Usually, the Frotteur experience fantasies about the victim, wishing to have a caring and affectionate relationship with the victim. The fantasy of the Frotteur is centered around; the choosing of the victim, the touching itself, and fleeing to a place where masturbation is possible. An escape plan is usually part of the process.

The victim is usually sexually attractive, and would be wearing tight fitted clothes. The Frotteur rubs her thighs or buttocks, or fondles her genitalia or breasts. In some cases, the victim is consenting.

The average age of the male Frotteur is usually between 15 and 25. This abnormal behavior tends to decrease when the man approaches his later twenties. The man is usually intelligent and forms part of the middle or upper class.

The Frotteur is not regarded as a great danger to society, yet he can move on to more dangerous paraphilias that would be a cause on concern.
