Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is also referred to as; Gardnerella-associated vaginitis and nonspecific vaginitis. This infection is actually the commonest vaginal infection that is not necessarily acquired or transmitted sexually. This BV condition occurs when the bacteria that normally exists in small numbers in the vagina, multiply rapidly.

Signs and Symtoms of Bacterial Vaginosis

Some women have no symptoms of BV, but the most common ones are;
  • A change in vaginal discharge. The discharge may increase, become thin and watery, change to white/grey and be smelly. This tends to occur more after having sexual intercourse.
  • Redness or soreness in and around the vagina.
  • Very rarely, itching, irritation or swelling in and around the vagina may occur.

    Development of Bacterial Vaginosis

    BV occurs when the acidity of the vagina changes. This can be caused by;
  • having sex without a condom and allowing semen to enter the vagina
  • douching (washing out the vagina) or using vaginal deodorants.
  • using too much perfumed soap when washing.
  • using very strong detergents to wash underwear.
  • using a coil (IUD)
  • changes of acidity in the vagina which may create an environment in which the bacteria may multiply.

    Diagnosis and treatment of Bacterial Vaginosis

    The diagnosis and treatment of BV is made by examining a specimen of the vaginal discharge under a microscope.

    The treatment is normally in form of antibiotic tablets or a cream to apply on the inside of the vagina. Taking Vitamin C and Zinc supplements will increase the effectiveness of the treatment.

    A pregnant woman should always warn her doctor before taking any medication for BV since BV can cause a miscarriage or other problems during and after pregnancy.

    Our diet also plays a role in BV. It is important to include the following food in your diet.
  • fresh fruit and vegetables (at least 5 portions daily)
  • meat, poultry and fish
  • at least 2 liters of fresh water daily.

    On the other hand it is possible wise to avoid
  • alcohol
  • coffee
  • junk food
  • high levels of sugar
