Sometimes, an apparently unrelated illness or physical condition can cause back pain. Before you visit your doctor, ask yourself the following back pain related questions. The answers will help in both diagnosis and treatment of the back pain.

  • When did the pain begin?

  • Is the pain better/worse when you bend or straighten your back?

  • Does the pain wake you up at night?

  • What lessons/increases the pain?

  • Do you have good control of your bladder and bowel?

  • Does the pain worsen when you sneeze or cough, or when you empty your bowels?

  • Do you feel "pins and needles"? Where exactly?

  • Have you recently started some unusually strenuous exercise programs or activities?

  • Where you involved in an accident?

  • Do you have a worsening headache?

  • Is there a family history of back problems?

  • Do you suffer from other illnesses?

  • Do you have a balanced diet?

  • Do you suffer from asthma, kidney problems or stomach ulcers?

  • Do you exercise regularly?

  • Have you been losing weight recently?

  • Do you have a fever?

  • Do you take steroids?
