Acne

What is acne?

There are 5 main basic type of acne. These are
  • Blackheads or Open Comedones
  • Whiteheads or Closed Comedones
  • Papules - red pimples acne2
  • Pustules - pimples with white pus at their top.
  • Cysts or Nodules - tender, sensitive, deeper lesions - filled with pus.
Acne affects mainly teenagers although it is by no means limited just to them. Although acne is not life threatening, when severe, it can lead to serious and permanent scarring. Even less severe cases can lead to scarring

How is acne caused?

Every type of acne is caused by excessive sebum production by the sebaceous glands. When there is an excess of sebum, the area around a hair follicle, the pore can become clogged. This will cause an inflammation, which is will cause a spot to swell and turn red. Sometimes as in severe acne, this pocket of inflammation within a pore can rupture, causing damage to the skin that could result in scarring.

Who gets acne?

Very close to 100 percent of all teens/adults get something from a mild to a severe form of acne at some point in their live, mainly in their younger years. It has been suggested, that hormones, diet, evolutionary biology, vitamin deficiency, stress, and other factors could all play a role in the process of acne.
